(Joshua 1:1-18) There are at least two promises at work in this passage. One comes from God and the other comes from some of the Isrealites. One promise was being fullfilled and that was the promise by a group of the Isrealites to go on with the others to fight.
There were some of the tribes of Isreal that decided that they were not going to cross over the Jordan river with their families and everything they had, they were staying on the East side. However, they had promised that they would go on and help the rest of the tribes fight as they claimed the promised land. They not only carried out this promise but also showed the love they had for their fellow Isrealites by continuing to fight along side them. This reminds of another verse found some time later in Scripture. 1 John 3:16 says, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” When we are self-sacrificing that is what true love is about. This is something that I desire to show especially to the ones I care deeply about. I want to lay aside any wants or desires I may have to serve them, and love them, unconditionally. I want to live a life that shows love to all people, putting aside my own desires. And God gives promise that will help us, help me, to be able to show that kind of love to others.
He promises that He will be with us wherever we go. No matter what we do or situation we are in, God is right there with us. We don’t have to worry about not having what it takes to love others unconditionally, because we can’t do it without Him. God is always there to give us the ability to do all things to His glory. This is my prayer fo today, that I work to live a life of serving and love to all.
